Novak Djokovic Wins Olympic Gold

2–3 minutes

The 24-time Grand Slam champion has finally won the only title that has eluded him his whole career. Olympic Gold. The 37-year-old Serb finally got over his Olympic semi-final hurdle, and reached the final by beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-4 6-2 in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Here are some of the main talking points from his successful gold medal campaign:

In the first round, Djokovic steam rolled past Australia’s Matt Ebden beating him 6-0 6-1 which then set up an enticing 60th encounter with his long time rival, Rafael Nadal. Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya had reported before the start of the tournament that Nadal “Had some discomfort” as he suffered from a thigh injury during practice. Nevertheless he overcame his first round opponent, Marton Fuscovics, beating him 6-1 4-6 6-4 to set up a second round meeting with Djokovic.

Djokovic was leading in the head to head, having 30 wins against Nadal’s 29 wins. They last met in the French Open 2022 quarterfinal where Nadal beat Djokovic 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(4). After this tightly fought match, the Spaniard then went onto win the tournament claiming his 14th French Open title. At the time, Nadal looked like he was establishing his dominance over Djokovic for the most Grand Slam titles won, as he was pulling away with 22 Grand Slams to Djokovic’s 20.

However, the Serb has now flipped that narrative on its head. After his 2022 Roland Garros defeat, the Serb went on to win 4 out of the next 6 Grand Slams, narrowly missing out on the “Calendar Slam” in 2023 as he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. He is now a 24-time Grand Slam champion. To add to this, he has finally won Olympic gold all the while defeating his biggest rival, Nadal, 6-1 6-4 in the second round and has increased his head to head tally to 31 wins.

Djokovic has proven himself to be someone that doesn’t give up. Just as he bounced back from his 2022 Nadal defeat in recent years, he’s also shown the ability to bounce back against his newest rival in Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic lost convincingly to the Spanish phenom in the Wimbledon 2024 final 6-2 6-2 7-4(4). 4 weeks later however, they faced each other again for their chance at a historic Olympic Gold. Djokovic refused to be denied his chance at claiming the ultimate prize, and he defeated Alcaraz 7-6(3) 7-6(2).

Here’s what he had to say in his press conference afterwards: “You know I was saying that representing my country has always been a greatest priority and honour for me. Whether it’s Olympic Games or Davis Cup or anywhere that I can carry proudly, the Serbian flag is something that really drives me and motivates me like nothing else. And the fact that I won the bronze in the first Olympic games and ever since then failed to win a medal, and played 3 out of 4 Olympic Games in semifinals and couldn’t overcome that obstacle and then now at aged 37 with a 21-year-old [Alcaraz], that is probably the best player in the world right now winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back and playing incredible tennis. When I take everything into consideration, this probably is the biggest sporting success I’ve ever had in my career.”

The new Olympic champion has now officially won everything the sport has to offer, and has also broken almost every record there is to break. So what’s next for Novak Djokovic?
